How are you interested in engineering and automobiles? Are you interested in other types of projects? How did you choose automotive engineering?

That can be traced back to my childhood. I am a very curious child. My mother said that it is difficult to raise me because nothing can stop me from doing things that interest me. So I did many experiments similar to scientific experiments, but some experiments did not work and detonated.

I really want to be an engineer or a doctor and feel very struggling. And since I grew up in a very poor background, it would cost too much money to be a doctor. So i choose to continue

Engineering, I do not regret it.

I am majoring in systems engineering at Kettering University. When I was there, it was the General Motors Research Institute. As a manufacturing system engineer, you will become a masterpiece in all walks of life.

I never really wanted a job where I have been in a particular job. I have always been curious and want to jump around. This is the wonderful way I went from TRW to GM until now in Ford's career.

When you were a young engineer, what projects did you work on at TRW?

I am a student in a cooperative, and one of the best jobs I have ever done is quality measurement. That really let me know that I want to enter the manufacturing system, because in the process, they gave me a few hours of complete autonomy, telling the management what the situation will be and how much the whole factory will cost.

This paved the way for me to grow into the person I am today, not only from the engineering side, but also from the business side.

In order to meet these standards, I have complete control over my schedule, so I did not attend with most partners at the same time. I came in at about nine o'clock, and I left at five o'clock. Sometimes I can work from home because I am a co-student, so I will get paid. I really like that special project, it is one of my favorite projects.

What does the measurement work for the factory involve?

They really didn't know why they even needed to measure. Therefore, small tools and gauges used to calibrate and check equipment are manual gauges. They wanted them to be more organized, so I came up with the idea of creating a "day tray" and with the budget they gave me, I went out, sorted the suppliers, and determined the cost. I don’t have enough budget!

For me, this is just a project. This is the first time I feel: "Wow, do you know? I can do this!" Second, I haven't really worked in engineering. I still have to manage to adapt to my role in the manufacturing system.

Third, it tells me that I really want to have more power to make decisions in the workplace. I think I might be 19 or 20 years old. Therefore, at a very young age, they really helped me shape who I am today. This is indeed one of the best jobs or tasks I can think of in my entire career, probably because it is a crucial point.

Then you graduated and got a job at General Motors. What are you doing there?

So at General Motors, I started with the Flint Metal Center. I started as a product engineer. In this particular work, we specialize in sheet metal. Interestingly, until today, when you buy a car, compared to many people, my way of browsing sheet metal is still different.

I am a quality engineer for sheet metal. I did it for about a year, and then they included me in my rotation program. I really like that special character because it shows me where I want to go. In terms of supervision, I worked for a period of time until I worked in the cradle area, then to the cooker hood and sheet metal work, and finally to purchase.

So I keep jumping and working at General Motors is no different. I think the maximum time I (work) may be about a year.

So at that time they were already providing you with training to continue to make greater development, because they are moving to you?

I will also become bored very quickly. And I was not young before, but I was not very old, but in my 20s, work was not boring. But I think this is just for me, when I learn something, I tend to get bored faster, and then there is no more learning curve. What about that job? I've had enough. It's like moving on. So it's great to have them let me participate in the program.

Then, when I switched to General Motors to purchase, it was on sale. To be honest, I don't like this job very much. I like this job, but I don't like this culture.

This culture is a bit dogmatic. It was not now, and I still know a lot of people at General Motors. But when I was there, it was dogma. This is not the friendliest culture. Therefore, when I want to build a family, it is crucial for me to turn to Ford, because I really want a culture that is more sensitive to the people who grow up the family, and a culture that is more kind.

When did you go

What makes you want to do this?

I moved to Ford in September 2006 to start a family. My daughter was born in February 2007. This is the main reason to go to Ford. I want to start a family. I want a job or culture suitable for people with a family, without wasting my career path.

Ford is great. And I have a child who feels self-development during his career at Ford. I jumped from the convertible roof and sunroof of General Motors to the convertible roof and sunroof of Ford. So it's a different team, but I played the same role.

I have purchased a total of four to five years. Unfortunately, part of the reason is that when the economy is down, I work in management and procurement, and I really like this role. This role allows me to use a variety of different skills. Not only are you trying to save costs from suppliers, but you are also not just a typical purchasing role.

You are more of helping suppliers to make ends meet. Then I also use my manufacturing background skills and understand their needs in the factory, so I can talk about their optimization of the personnel on the production line.

The manager there is really good. Then who said it, it's your turn. He helped me jump to product development.

What are you doing right now

I am doing a lot of product development. I am in the modular architecture team. When I first got involved in powertrain product development, I first did a headcount count, then moved on and made a work plan for vehicles and systems

Then, I just handed over to this position in July last year, responsible for smart redesign and modular architecture.

What are you doing for the modular architecture team?

I like working in modular teams. It provides another point of view and understands the actual development direction of the company, that is, the cost we want to optimize. You know, we are now not only focusing on the engine and gearbox, but also a complete system for viewing. When developing a new product line, you are optimizing the top and reusing these same modules and products. This is what it really does to ensure that the team uses the correct modules. Not just me, but a team of six of us.

My main role in the group is to reduce changes in the modular catalog. I really like it because it does provide me with an insight that I have never had before. This is how to choose a system for future models and working closely with senior management.

Therefore, this is definitely the path of professional development, and I have excellent managers, and my team is very good. So it's very good, and I don't plan to move anytime soon. Unless they move me out!

My managers really support my entrepreneurial spirit. Therefore, this is another reason why I do not plan to move, because this is rare.

Do you have any opinions on the challenges or obstacles in your career, whether it is gender or race, or something different from most of your colleagues?

I have experienced in the past, as a woman in the auto industry, when black women joined the second tier, I experienced racism, and experienced gender bias in the past.

I would say that it is not this kind of culture at the moment. That is not my experience. What I want to say is that, for example, in the group I am now in, there are four active employees. The two of us are African American women. One is Asian American and the other is White American. Therefore, among these four, it is very diverse. There are men, and there are women, with different ages. I have never seen this job, nor have I seen most of the jobs in the drivetrain, and I have not experienced too many issues with gender bias. I would say that there must be an inclusive culture.

Now, I really like my head. She is so awesome. You can participate in some activities to learn more about the identity of your colleagues and their culture. I really like that, because in the past, it was strange that you even asked. I have never been like that. I have always been curious about other cultures, different people and languages, and even different foods and things. Therefore, I have always been very open and willing to ask for relevant information. I like the fact that some actual events are now being held to figure out the difference between someone and you.

Even people who grow up are different. Many people don't know that I have grown up until they start reading articles. I thought: "Yes, there is poverty there. Then it is me, under poverty."

Speaking of articles about entrepreneurship, now that you have established your own organic soap company, what do you know about soap?

Absolutely not! I don't know anything about it, so to be honest, this is the last thing on my mind. My son was born in October 2014. One month later, when he was born, he started to have eczema all over his body, and he was tired with eczema on his hands, face, eyelids, and legs.

I don't know anything about skin care products. I always take them back to see a doctor, a dermatologist. They prescribed all drugs containing steroids, which did not really help his skin. I do remember reading one of the labels, which said "may affect growth".

That scared me. I thought, "Wait a minute!" So from then on, I started to research alternatives to help me solve his skin problems. Therefore, I researched and discovered natural soaps and body moisturizers and other creams. So I bought ladies soap, she made handmade soap, because it is natural, so I can read the ingredients.

The only problem with their soap was three ounces, which was $15 at the time. That's too expensive. After a while, I think I was complaining to a girlfriend, and she said, "Okay, make your own soap."

"Oh, who is that? I don't have time! I'm an engineer. I'm working. I don't have time."

I finally bought a soap box for myself and made the soap in the soap box. But I soon discovered that there was perfume in the kit, which my son could not use, and there were some ingredients that he could not use.

Therefore, I asked my girlfriends to help me balance a recipe that would make it natural. Therefore, I went to the library and found the recipe for making soap recipes. The rest is history.

Therefore, the first bar is an oatmeal milk and honey bar, which I now sell in a fragrance-free form, it has whole grain oatmeal and honey, and no fragrance. After using it for a few months, his skin did start to clear. I thought, "Oh, great!"

Many people like the body butter I made because I tested it for six months on all different skin types, different races, and different ages. I want a non-greasy body butter because many of them are greasy. My body butter is great. It contains mango, shea butter and avocado oil, all of which are great and rich in vitamins.

And I also used arrowroot powder, you can even eat it! Arrowroot is a halal food, a kosher food, and a pure vegetarian food. It has a long effect. In body butter, I find it helps to make the butter creamy and therefore non-greasy. Therefore, I use it with soap on his skin, and his skin gets better and better over time.

How much business are you engaged in and where are your products sold?

Okay, okay, my products are mainly sold on my website,

I also own a store now, which is only open on weekends or Fridays and Saturdays, so people in the area can come and buy.

There is not much space in my home. That’s great. Then, I’m currently in two stores, but I’m expanding. Since the story spread, I have received many suggestions. Then in terms of quantity, we get 10 to 20 orders. Therefore, I hope to hire some people part-time to put labels and help deliver goods.

This is a blessing, because it is a good thing to be able to help others find a job and make some money while your business grows. I never thought I would be someone’s boss! It's a bit different, but I am here and I currently have a part-time employee.

Since there is so much growth, trying to balance the two tasks is an adjustment, but making soap for me is not a lot of work. I have been having trouble sleeping, and when I make soap at night, it really calms me to a place where I can sleep. It is indeed very therapeutic, and it doesn't feel working at all.

The only feeling I am talking about is that the work is making butter because they are made in heavy bags. Then you can pour them into the container. But, use soap to make them into cakes and soaps, it's fun!
